My first experience with Romero's was through an UberEats order. The in person experience is much better as the food is fresh from the kitchen and hasn't cooled over the delivery drive. Romero's definitely isn't your typical Mexican restaurant found in the Houston area. The tortilla chips and salsa are both served warm. The salsa also isn't your typical tomato tasting salsa you normally get. The salsa has tons of flavor and a little heat to it, well at least for me. I typically eat on the spicier side and can handle much spicier foods. So the little amount of heat was a nice change from what i have normally experienced in Houston. Since it was the weekend, I decided to try the menudo which was spot on with plenty of hominy and tripe. The menudo comes with chopped cilantro and onions on the side as well as lime wedges and comes with three corn tortillas that seems to be made fresh in house. The charro beans are a must over the refried beans. They have a great smokiness to them from the bacon. The queso flameado con chorizo is also wonderful with a blend of Monterey Jack and Mozerella cheeses. Scooping up the flameado with the fresh corn tortillas leaves a wonderful mix of flavors. The enchiladas Mixtecas are superb with the traditional flavor to them that more reminiscent of the red enchiladas sauce flavor from New Mexico compared to the typical Tex-Mex flavors here. Finally, we have Mama's Mole which is two chicken drumsticks smothered in homemade mole sauce. The mole sauce wasn't what I was expecting. It was much sweeter than moles I have had in the past, but has a wonderful flavor that pairs nicely with the chicken. UPDATE: I added on the sopapillas after posting the review. The sopapillas are better than what I expected. Normally they are swimming in a sea of liquid caramel and topped with tons of powdered sugar. Not these. These were lightly topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar and had a classic honey drizzle on them. They were divine. I have definitely found my new go to Mexican restaurant in Houston and will definitely be returning. You can feel the love and time that is put into the food here. The food was good overall and our waiter was friendly. What stood out, though, was that management seemed to spend much more time greeting and checking on the tables around us while our table received very little attention. It made the service feel uneven and honestly a bit uncomfortable. I hope the restaurant works toward giving the same level of attention to every guest. Won’t be back again for a while.. Great food, great service, and always a good atmosphere. Staff was friendly and made us feel welcome from the time we walked in. Food came out fresh, hot, and full of flavor. You can tell they take pride in the place. Definitely one of our go to spots. Come out for Gator Night and support the Third Coast Gators. Appreciate the hospitality. I can't believe that I have not reviewed Romero's. We have been coming here for 14 years and every aspect of our experiences always been wonderful. If we have guests at church from out of town, this is where we take them after church. The atmosphere is good, the service is always good muy sabroso. The fajitas, the chimichangas, the regional dishes, everything is great. If you haven't gone, go. The service was great and the food was even better. Pictured is the El Mero Mero (Grilled chicken breast stuffed with shrimp,pico de gallo and cheese, topped with mushrooms and tomatoes in a tequila lime butter sauce …very flavorful the seasons to perfection. I also had chicken empanadas. We went on a Thursday evening, there was live music and they have happy hour 3:00pm -10:00pm.
